Detailed description of Gus Wortham Park Golf Course

Gus Wortham Park Golf Course, previously the Old Houston Country Club golf course, is a Public, 18 hole golf course located along Brays Bayou in the south-central area of Houston, Texas.

The course dates to 1908. For almost 50 years this was the Houston Country Club's golf course. The golf course was probably a joint designed collaboration by wintering professional Tom MacNamara and Texas' first resident professional, Willie Maguire. The course underwent remodeling in the 1920s. Records indicate that Donald Ross was consulted on the work. In 1957. Houston Country Club relocated to the Tanglewood subdivision of Houston. The old course became Houston Executive Club until 1972 when the City of Houston purchased the course and renamed it in honor of Houston Country Club member and insurance magnate, Gus Wortham.

This busy public course is fun for all skill levels of golfer. The course has a bayou running through two holes. In addition, there are ponds which come into play on many other holes. Elevated tees and uphill carries to greens make you use all your clubs. The course is relatively wide open, making it attractive for all levels of golfers. The front nine features three consecutive par five holes, two of which you may want to go for in two. Your shot- making skills will be tested on several of the "short but challenging" par fours. Gus Wortham is a fun course located only minutes from downtown.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees, the course plays to 6,270 yards. From the forward tees, the course plays to 5,322 yards and a par of 74. The longest hole on the course is #3, a par-5 that plays to 511 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 8, a par-3 that plays to 127 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 7; the 390-yard par-4 challenge is the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Gus Wortham is # 10, a 135 yard par-3.

Gus Wortham is the oldest continually operated 18-hole golf course in Texas.

Gus Wortham's 7.5 million dollar golf course renovation was interrupted, but not curtailed by Hurricane Harvey in 2017.  The course is scheduled to reopen October 1, 2018.

Course is in very good condition after recent renovations. Fun layout with good variety and a couple of reachable par 5s. Definitely worth the price and a trip. Biggest con is that the clubhouse/pro shop is temporary while new clubhouse is under construction.

Would travel: 20-30 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing, Ranks with the best in this price level

Municipal course. Ok course and conditions. Pace of play too slow. A little overpriced in this market.
